Two things in my life have been constant – music and travel.
Growing up with a parent who worked at an airline meant that we were always on the go. Flying to exotic destinations, family camping trips, or just taking endless road trips was ‘the norm’ when I was young – so it was an easy transition to bring the wanderlust lifestyle with me into adulthood. Learning to fly – and becoming an airline pilot – helped me to scratch the constant itch to travel. As a pilot, I was always looking down from 35,000 feet at new places to visit. Long road trips, sailing through the Caribbean in my sailboat, and playing my guitar and singing to an audience – well . . . it’s not a bad way to live!
My love for music also began very early for me. My father’s legendary record collection – mostly 60’s folk, country, and rock – set in motion a passion for music that has defined me in many ways. The Beach Boys attended the high school that – twenty years later - I attended. It’s no surprise that I feel at home with a guitar on my lap, a microphone in my face – and an audience in front of me. Music unifies us – it transcends cultures and brings people together in ways that other things simply can’t do. It not only reminds us of significant moments in our lives – it transports us back to those moments.
My time in bars, resorts, dives – and pretty much everything in between – has given me an opportunity to feel what audiences want to hear. I often sit in the audience and observe – which songs make them respond favorably? Which genres?
